Julia Corner: The Educator

Julia Corner or “Miss Corner” (1798–1875) was a prolific novelist, children’s writer, and educator, producing some 250 works in her lifetime. She was born in London, the daughter of John Corner, an engraver and printmaker.  While she wrote several novels throughout her life, Julia Corner was much more influential in education and the publication of textbooks. She developed a series of volumes that became known as “Miss Corner’s Historical Library” (1840-48). The publications, focused on Europe, covered countries from Ireland to Turkey. Sir Jon Gilbert, artist and illustrator, contributed images to some of these volumes. Popular in their time, the series was later revised and reprinted as “Every Child’s History”.  With her successful publications on Europe, Corner moved onto a history of China and India. Most of her publications are viewed as conservative and inline with commonly accepted perspectives and interpretations. Corner did include more content related to social and economic history, than most of her peers.

In addition to history, Corner also published many works for children for instructional purposes, moral lessons, or simply as entertainment.

Though she dedicated her life to children’s education, she herself remained unmarried and childless through her life.
